Threat Description

A Microsoft Entra agent identity with no active sponsor presents a security and governance risk because no active business representative is accountable for its purpose, lifecycle, and access requirements. If the only assigned user sponsors are disabled or otherwise unable to perform their responsibilities, the agent identity can effectively lack the oversight required to determine whether it is still needed and whether its access remains appropriate.

Without an active sponsor, inappropriate access or unexpected agent activity may remain unreviewed for longer, increasing the risk that compromised or unnecessary agent identities continue to operate with existing permissions.

Example: A team creates an agent identity for a pilot project and assigns a single user as its sponsor. The sponsor later leaves the organization, and their account is disabled, but the sponsorship assignment remains. The agent identity continues to operate with its existing permissions. If an attacker subsequently compromises the agent identity, there might be no active sponsor to recognize that its activity or access no longer aligns with its intended business purpose.

Remediation

Assign at least one valid sponsor to the agent identity, remove sponsors that are disabled or no longer responsible for the agent, and verify that the agent identity’s permissions remain appropriate for its intended business purpose.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as an Agent ID Administrator or an owner of the agent identity.
  2. Under Entra ID, select Agents, and then select Agent identities.
  3. Select the affected agent identity.
  4. Under Access, select Owners and sponsors.
  5. Review the assigned sponsors. Verify that user sponsors have enabled accounts. For group sponsors, confirm that the group is a supported sponsor type and contains appropriate members.
  6. Select Add, and then select Add sponsor.
  7. Search for and select one or more active users or appropriate supported groups that can assume business responsibility for the agent identity.
  8. Select Add.
  9. Remove user sponsors whose accounts are disabled and any user or group sponsors that are no longer responsible for the agent identity.
  10. Confirm that at least one valid sponsor remains assigned.
  11. Review the permissions assigned to the agent identity and confirm that they are appropriate for its intended business purpose.
