Threat Description

A password reset or account unlock for a privileged account can indicate a security incident when it occurs outside an approved change window, is performed by an unexpected initiator, or is not supported by an authorized change request. These actions can restore access to an account that was locked, disabled, or previously compromised.

If abused, a privileged reset/unlock can enable privilege escalation, credential abuse, and lateral movement. For example, an attacker with access to helpdesk workflows may reset a highly privileged account (such as a domain admin) and use the new credentials to access sensitive systems and make follow-on changes.

Threat actors are known to target service desk processes using social engineering to trigger unauthorized password resets and unlocks. Campaigns associated with groups such as Scattered Spider have specifically leveraged helpdesk interaction to obtain password resets (and related identity control changes) to facilitate account takeover.

NOTE: Cayosoft Guardian defines privileged users in Active Directory as users with adminCount=1. By design Active Directory uses this attribute to protect members of administrative groups.

According to security best practices it is not recommended re-using admin accounts, instead these accounts must be de-provisioned. If an account has administrative permissions, it might also obtain access to other resources using these administrative permissions and keep this access even after it is removed from the administrative groups. NOTE: This threat rule includes a built-in lookback parameter set to 25 hours. Only events that occurred within this timeframe are processed by the rule.

Remediation

  1. Confirm the initiator is authorized to perform privileged account password resets/unlocks and that the action matches an approved change request and change window.
  2. If the action is unauthorized or suspicious, immediately disable the affected account (or remove privileged group memberships as appropriate) and revoke any active sessions/tokens to force re-authentication.
  3. In Cayosoft Guardian, open Change History to filter by the affected account and Who (initiator), and review changes around the alert time for related suspicious activity (for example, group membership, permission, delegation, or GPO changes).
  4. Notify Security Operations/Incident Response and the account owner (if applicable), document findings and actions taken, and review privileged access and helpdesk reset/unlock procedures to prevent recurrence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AD privileged account password reset or unlock mean?

A password reset or account unlock for a user with administrative permissions in Active Directory, which can indicate unauthorized access when performed outside an approved change window, by an unexpected initiator, or without proper authorization.

A compromised privileged account's permissions can be exploited to escalate privileges and move laterally within the network. This access enables attackers to persist in the environment and evade detection.

Attackers can exploit a password reset or account unlock for a privileged Active Directory account by using the restored access to compromise other accounts, escalate privileges, and move laterally within the network. This can also enable them to maintain persistence in the environment.

Cayosoft Guardian monitors Active Directory events to detect a password reset or account unlock for a privileged user, and flags it as a security issue if the change occurs outside an approved window, by an unexpected initiator, or lacks proper authorization.

Cayosoft Guardian provides visibility into changes made to privileged accounts and alerts administrators to review and investigate. This enables teams to quickly identify and respond to potential security incidents, preventing further compromise.
